SMILE in the NEWS:
SMILE Celebrates a Successful Year
A Message from the Director:
The first year of existence for SMILE has been one filled with excitement, successes and learning. Many volunteers spent time spreading the word about SMILE in several area events. A great deal of time spent in 2008 was devoted to raising funds for future programs. The organization awarded two scholarships to two very deserving single mothers. A support group program began in the fall of 2008 creating another avenue of support for single moms. However, through all of our excitement and successes it seemed as though we were missing something – something vital to our mission.
Throughout the year, we met many single moms and heard their stories. As we participated in community events, we broadened our exposure beyond the walls of colleges and universities. Many of the single moms we met did not attend college but clearly desired assistance in other areas. Some needed to learn how to create and live within a budget while others wanted to communicate with other single moms to share ideas. Some need to know where to find assistance or advice from professionals. Still others needed to learn valuable job skills such as how to write a resume or how to use computer programs such as Word or Excel.
The word “education” began to take on a completely new meaning for those on the Board at SMILE. We realized that education is not just formal but includes life lessons as well. If we only looked at formal education, we excluded an entire segment of the single mom population that needed our help. We also realized that helping these women was still part of what we originally set out to accomplish – to help single moms with “education”. This new meaning of “education” opens the door to assist more single mothers – not only those in school but those seeking to improve their life by learning many other necessary skills to enable them to succeed.
